  • Key sectors would suffer serious impacts.

Immigration has become one of the most relevant issues for American voters ahead of the November elections.

Donald Trump, former president and candidate in this race, has based much of his campaign on tough-line proposals against illegal immigration.

A new study from the Peterson Institute for International Economics reveals that Trump is proposing even more extreme immigration restrictions than in his previous term.

Among the most radical measures is the elimination of unauthorized immigrants from the country’s workforce, an idea that has generated intense debate among experts and politicians.

Trump has openly talked about carrying out the “largest internal deportation operation in American history,” targeting between 15 and 20 million unauthorized immigrants.

Of this total, an estimated 8.3 million are currently participating in the country’s workforce, increasing concern about the economic impact of these deportations.

The Peterson Institute study focuses on two possible deportation scenarios: one that contemplates the expulsion of 1.3 million unauthorized workers, and another more ambitious one that projects the deportation of 8.3 million workers.

Researchers suggest that Trump’s planned mass deportations could take place between 2025 and 2026.

According to the study, the deportation of 1.3 million immigrant workers would result in a 2.5% decrease in the agricultural workforce, according to Fox 5.

However, if all 8.3 million immigrant workers were deported, the effects on the economy would be significantly more drastic.

Sectors such as agriculture, mining and manufacturing would be severely affected. Which could generate an economic crisis in regions dependent on these workers.

Trump has suggested that implementing this plan would require the mobilization of local security forces. The National Guard and even the standing army of the United States.

Trump warns migrants

Proposes moving thousands of troops who are currently on missions abroad to the border between the United States and Mexico to reinforce deportation measures.

Additionally, he suggests invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807 to allow the military to arrest unauthorized immigrants. A controversial measure that has drawn criticism from human rights defenders.

Trump also wants to speed up deportations through changes to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policies. Allowing mass raids on workplaces instead of detaining immigrants individually.

This modification, according to the former president, would reduce the burden on current detention centers, which already face overcrowding and capacity problems.
