  • Possible trilateral summit with Zelensky

According to EFE, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that “there is a strong possibility” of a meeting “very soon” with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

The statement took place in the Oval Office, where Trump responded to reporters’ questions following leaks that the White House is preparing a meeting with Putin for next week.

According to official sources, the Republican president is also considering a second, trilateral meeting that would include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The information was confirmed following a three-hour meeting in Moscow between Putin and Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy.

White House Sets Deadline for the Kremlin

“Today we had very good conversations with President Putin, and there’s a strong chance we can close this round, the end of that road,” Trump said.

The president was clear that the goal of the potential meeting would be to find a negotiated solution to the war in Ukraine.

During a phone call held the same day, Trump informed Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte of his plans.

He also set a deadline of this Friday for Moscow to order a ceasefire in the fighting, as a condition to avoid new sanctions.

International Tension over Ukraine Ceasefire

Trump’s ultimatum to the Kremlin has raised tensions in Washington and across European capitals.

The United States has warned that failure to comply will result in secondary sanctions affecting trade with Russia.

For their part, both the Kremlin and Trump’s inner circle described the meeting between Putin and Witkoff as “satisfactory.”

International media outlets speculate that Russia may be willing to suspend airstrikes, while continuing its ground offensive in Donbas and along Ukraine’s northern border.

Zelensky Weighs Attending the Summit

This possibility has generated skepticism among European allies, who view a partial reduction in hostilities as insufficient.

The Ukrainian government has not publicly confirmed its participation in a potential summit, though diplomatic sources indicate Zelensky may attend under certain conditions.

From Brussels, NATO has reiterated that any dialogue must guarantee Ukraine’s territorial integrity and not legitimize Russian military advances.

Meanwhile, Trump continues to present himself as a leader capable of resolving high-level international conflicts.

Trump and Putin Seek Diplomatic Agreement

In his remarks, the U.S. president emphasized his intention to lead the end of the war as a top priority of his administration.

Some analysts believe Trump’s strategy is to accelerate a deal before the fall election campaign.

Other observers warn that a rushed negotiation could consolidate Russia’s territorial gains and weaken Ukraine’s position.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox Business that “there is still a long way to go” before a summit can be confirmed.

Sanctions on Russia If There’s No Ceasefire

Rubio also stated that any meeting will depend on tangible progress and verifiable commitments from Moscow.

“The situation is still developing, but we hope there’s an opportunity for a meeting with Putin and Zelensky in the near future,” he said.

In this context, Friday is shaping up to be a key date to determine whether the door to dialogue will open—or if economic pressure on Russia will intensify.

The next few hours will be crucial in determining whether Trump can move toward a deal—or if the conflict in Ukraine will enter a new phase of diplomatic tension.
