A historic meeting in preparation.

U.S. President Donald Trump is considering inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the meeting he will hold next Friday in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Outlets such as NBC, CNN, and NewsNation reported that the invitation is under discussion at the White House, although it has not been officially confirmed.

According to CNN, sources close to the matter say Trump has not completely ruled out the idea, while NBC notes that advisers are still debating whether Zelensky’s participation would be part of a trilateral summit or a separate meeting.

The meeting between Trump and Putin is scheduled for August 15.

It will mark the first encounter between a U.S. president and the Russian leader since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.

Logistical details are still being worked out.

But international expectations are high given the potential impact on the course of the conflict.

Context and prior arrangements

The meeting was confirmed after White House Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff visited Moscow last Thursday.

This trip came just one day before the expiration of the ultimatum issued by Trump for Russia to take concrete steps to end the war, under the warning of new economic sanctions.

Zelensky’s possible role adds a delicate element to the diplomatic equation. Since the start of the war, Kyiv has insisted that any peace negotiations must include Ukraine as an active participant.

His absence from a high-level meeting with Putin could be interpreted as excluding his voice from the country’s future.

International reactions and warnings

On Saturday, Zelensky warned that decisions made without Ukraine’s participation are “dead on arrival” and do not lead to peace.

His stance reflects concerns that an agreement between Washington and Moscow, without Kyiv at the table, could compromise the sovereignty and security of his nation.

This message aims to put pressure on ensuring any diplomatic initiative includes direct representation from Kyiv.

With only days to go before the Alaska summit, attention is focused on whether Trump will opt for a bilateral format with Putin or open the door to a three-way negotiation that, if realized, could redefine the diplomatic landscape of the conflict.
