- Trump threatens high tariffs.
- U.S. negotiating with few countries.
- European Union close to a deal.
U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed on Wednesday his threat to impose tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on countries with which the U.S. fails to reach individual trade agreements by August 1.
In a speech delivered in Washington, Trump stated that “there are many countries you just can’t negotiate with,” suggesting that his administration’s patience is running out.
This measure is part of a series of tariff decisions enacted by the president in April, according to EFE and El Financiero.
That month, he imposed a global 10% tariff on foreign goods and began applying additional levies in an effort to reduce the U.S. trade deficit with international partners.

Initially, Trump had set a deadline of July 9 to reach agreements, but he extended that deadline to August 1.
So far, the United States has reached agreements with only six countries: the United Kingdom, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and China.

With China, the agreement is temporary and has reduced U.S. tariffs from 145% to 30%, while Chinese tariffs on American goods have dropped from 125% to 10%. Negotiations are still ongoing.
However, for countries that have yet to finalize agreements, Trump has begun sending letters notifying them of tariffs ranging from 20% to 40%, with specific threats targeting Mexico (30%) and Canada (35%).

In the case of Brazil, the threat reaches 50%, due to the prosecution of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Trump insisted that his tariff strategy aims to negotiate with over 200 countries.
“People don’t realize there are a lot of deals. Even if you’re like me, a deal junkie, it’s too many,” he remarked with a defiant tone.
As for negotiations with the European Union, talks are ongoing.
Conclusion
Although Trump has threatened 30% tariffs on European products, diplomatic sources confirmed that both sides are close to reaching an agreement with a 15% tariff.
According to the president, if the EU agrees to open its market to U.S. companies, those companies will be allowed to pay lower tariffs.
The future of the negotiations will be crucial in determining whether Trump follows through on his threat or if agreements are reached that prevent the imposition of these high trade duties.
