President of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed there will be a response to the European Union’s trade retaliations.
«Of course I will respond,» he declared after a meeting at the White House with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
The EU announced countermeasures against the 25% tariffs imposed by Washington on steel and aluminum.
The European bloc will apply the countermeasures in two phases while seeking a negotiated solution with the US.

First, it will allow the suspensions of measures approved in 2018 and 2020 to expire.
Second, the European Commission proposes a new package to match the economic impact of the tariffs.
The amount of European retaliations could reach 28 billion euros.
Trump justified his decision by stating that the EU has treated the United States «very unfairly.»
«If they charge us 25%, 20%, 2% or 200%, that’s what we will charge them,» the president remarked.
Since returning to the White House on January 20th, he has pursued a more aggressive tariff policy.
The Republican president maintained that the US has been the victim of trade abuses for too long.
«We have really been abused for a long time and it will never happen again,» he stated.
Starting this Wednesday, the U.S. is applying a 25% tariff on imported steel and aluminum.
The new tariffs affect Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, and Vietnam in the steel sector.
