The governments of the United States and Mexico have agreed to coordinate patrols on both sides of their shared border, increase information exchange, and establish immediate communication mechanisms, according to the US Department of Defense.

The agreement resulted from a meeting between US Northern Command Chief General Gregory Guillot and Mexico’s Secretary of Defense Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, where they discussed border security cooperation.

Joseph Kasper, Chief of Staff for the US Department of Defense, emphasized that both nations will respect each other’s sovereignty in implementing these measures.

The meeting concluded with the signing of a «Joint Understanding Agreement», aimed at strengthening mutual security and fostering further discussions and coordination at various levels.

Meanwhile, U.S. immigration authorities reported an 85% decrease in border crossings during the first 11 days of Donald Trump’s second term, compared to the same period in 2024.

Additionally, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) attributed the decline to Trump’s new executive actions on immigration.

However, the downward trend in irregular crossings had already begun in June 2024 under Joe Biden’s administration, following stricter asylum policies.

On his first day in office, Trump declared a national emergency at the US-Mexico border and deployed 15,000 troops to reinforce security, calling the situation a «form of invasion.»

Mexico and the US Continue Negotiations

In response to these measures, Mexico deployed 10,000 National Guard troops in early February as part of a temporary agreement with the U.S.

This deal also included a one-month suspension of the 25% tariffs on Mexican products, which Trump had previously threatened to impose.

Negotiations between both nations remain ongoing as they work toward defining long-term security strategies and cooperation at the border.
