- Walmart announces store closures in February.
- Hundreds of employees are affected.
- The retailer announces their strategy.
In a shocking blow to the community, retail giant Walmart has confirmed the closure of more stores in the United States this year.
This is not good news for shoppers, since there are fewer and fewer locations to choose from.
It is worth mentioning that in California they have announced the closure of two branches on February 9, 2024.
One store located on Imperial Avenue in San Diego and another on Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon, will close their doors next month.

These two California stores will be forced to cease operations due to high rental costs.
This decision will affect 357 employees, though they will be offered jobs at other locations in the area.
The decision to close these stores is not an isolated event. Since last year, Walmart has been implementing a closure strategy, setting a worrying precedent.
In 2023, the chain closed 22 stores in 14 different states, raising concerns about the company’s stability in the retail market.

It has been revealed that despite these closures, Walmart still operates more than 4,600 stores nationwide.
The chain has sought to adapt to the changing dynamics of retail commerce, using consolidation and resource optimization strategies.
In the specific case of the selected San Diego branch, the closures are due a dispute with the property owners.
They were not able to come to an agreement about renewing the lease.
A message to employees

Brian K. Little, director of communications at Walmart, thanked customers for their continued support in these locations.
He also expressed the company’s continued commitment to providing services through other stores in the area.
In a statement he said: “We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our San Diego and El Cajon stores.”
«We look forward to continuing to serve them at any of our many locations across the area, on walmart.com and through delivery to their home or business,” he added.
Bad news for employees?

News of the closure has sparked concern in the community, especially among affected employees who will lose their jobs.
However, the company has underscored its commitment to easing the transition of workers to other Walmart locations.
The 125 affected employees in San Diego and 232 in El Cajon will have the option to be transferred to other Walmart locations.
This move adds to the adjustments the company has been making in response to its financial performance.
An improvement for Walmart?

This move comes as the company is making adjustments to lease negotiations, according to El diario NY.
The announcement of the closures comes at a time when the retail industry is undergoing significant changes.
The news will be a blow to Parkway Plaza, which has already appeared to be struggling to attract business to the El Cajon shopping center.
The other location, on Imperial Avenue, isn’t as large, but it’s loss will still impact the community.
