Recently, the CEO of the San Francisco 49ers was asked what he thought when he remembered their Super Bowl defeat four years ago.
Jed York ironically responded: «I remember Nick Bosa getting held on third-and-long and that not getting called.»
For this reason, he is not very excited that Bill Vinovich will referee Super Bowl 58.

One of the big fears is that — in one of most important games in football — a bad decision or non-decision by the referee will influence the outcome.
«The reality is, if something happens in the Super Bowl, that is going to stay with you the entire offseason,» says the NFL’s head of officiating Dean Blandino.
The former replay official added, «There’s no doubt that is a major, major concern.»
What will happen on Sunday, February 11?
‘No official wants to be part of the story’

Owners, executives, coaches and players do not a referee to make a serious mistake in the Super Bowl.
Nor do fans or bettors (who, in addition to betting on the final result, can bet on the number of penalized yards, etc.).
The referees themselves also dread something like that happening.
«No official wants to be part of the story,» said Mike Pereira, who worked on the field and then supervised the league’s officiating. «None.»
Bill Vinovich has already made serious mistakes

It is very bad when there is an error in the regular season that dominates the conversation the next day, as happened several times in 2023.
It’s even worse in the playoffs and especially when it affects the outcome of a key game.
This happened to Bill Vinovich (who will referee Super Bowl 58) and his crew when they missed an obvious penalty.
It occurred in the championship clash in January 2019 when the Los Angeles Rams defeated the New Orleans Saints.
‘The level of scrutiny is at the highest I’ve ever seen it’

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about officiating during a media session in Las Vegas.
He noted that «the level of scrutiny is at the highest I’ve ever seen it» and that «even when an official gets it right, there’s criticism.»
Today, there are conspiracy theories about officiating decisions that could result in bias from an individual or even the league.
Some decisions can be interpreted in different ways, and a player, coach or fans can see them differently.

Although Roger Goodell described current officiating as «excellent,» he acknowledged that the NFL still has a lot of room for improvement.
One option would be to hire more full-time officials like MLB, NBA and NHL.
Bill Vinovich will referee Super Bowl 58, along with umpire Terry Killens and down judge Patrick Holt.
Also, line judge Mark Perlman, field judge Tom Hill, side judge Allen Baynes, back judge Brad Freeman and replay official Mike Chase will be present.
