Today on «Love and Other Things,» psychologist and sexologist specializing in couples’ issues, José Luis López Velarde, guides us through the complex reasons behind our infatuation.

Why are we attracted to certain people and not others? What biological, anthropological, and emotional factors influence the process of falling in love?

José Luis starts by breaking down the first layer of infatuation: the anthropological. Here, he refers to everything that makes us human, our culture, social contact, and the history of our species.

Although we would all like to believe that we are unique in our romantic choices, there are universal indicators that affect most of us. For example, the attraction to people who demonstrate skills in caring for and educating children.

This behavior, such as playing and setting boundaries with children, is interpreted as a sign of the ability to protect and provide a safe environment for the offspring’s growth.

Youth and joviality are also attractive, as they indicate the ability to procreate and a life full of laughter.

Who Does This Remind Me Of?

The second layer of infatuation is personal life history. From conception to the present, all significant emotional experiences can influence whom we feel attracted to.

José Luis mentions that we often look for characteristics in potential partners that remind us of significant figures in our childhood, like mom or dad.

These early experiences of love and attachment can leave deep marks on our subconscious, influencing our future romantic choices.

Identifying these influences can be key to understanding why we are attracted to certain people.

Emotional Responsibility

Finally, José Luis introduces us to the third layer of infatuation: conscious programming. This stage is only accessible after deep personal growth and self-awareness work.

Here, we can reprogram our beliefs and emotions to consciously choose people who bring us healthy and reciprocal love.

This involves identifying our emotional needs and looking for partners who can meet them in a balanced way.

José Luis emphasizes the importance of making a list of our emotional states and the actions we expect from a partner in each of them.
