The detention of Mireya Alexandra Blancarte Márquez, wife of a U.S. war veteran, has provoked outrage and deep pain in her family.
On August 11, federal immigration agents arrested Blancarte Márquez at the Nogales, Arizona, port of entry, when she attempted to renew her travel permit.
Her husband, Eddie J. Rosa, 43, a USPS electronics technician and former member of the Marine Corps, the Army Reserve, and the Ohio National Guard, denounced the treatment his wife received.
Rosa recounted that agents handcuffed his wife and forced her to walk in public “like a common criminal,” despite the fact that she had no criminal record in the United States or in Mexico.

“My wife has no criminal record of any kind in this country or in Mexico. As a fervent defender of our constitutional republic, I felt violated and disrespected,” Rosa told Newsweek.
The veteran, who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, said the arrest was “a slap in the face” to his family.

“I have answered my country’s call and will not hesitate to do so again. But this is about my wife. This was not only disrespectful, but also a slap in the face to my family,” he said.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Blancarte Márquez was detained because she had overstayed her visa and lied to Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
DHS Cites Visa Violation and False Statements to CBP
“Mireya Alexandra Blancarte Márquez was detained by CBP at the DeConcini port of entry after lying to officers about when she entered the country and where she was staying,” a DHS spokesperson told Newsweek.
Authorities added that during questioning it was also confirmed she had exceeded the validity of her visa and her I-94 travel permit.
Blancarte Márquez, 40, mother of two U.S. citizen children, had been living in the country with a visitor visa since November 2024.
Rosa explained that the family had been in the process of regularizing her immigration status before the detention occurred.
Emotional Impact on the Family and Children
The situation has taken a heavy toll on the veteran, who is fully disabled and depends on his wife’s care. “She is my caregiver. She is my only support system,” Rosa lamented.
Blancarte’s absence has also directly affected their 13-year-old son, who has stopped attending school because of the emotional impact of the arrest.
Mireya’s sister, Adriana Blancarte, said the boy has needed psychological help.
“It has been incredibly impactful for the whole family, especially for her son. He has been depressed,” she told Newsweek.
Context of Immigration Policies Under Trump
The case is framed within the immigration policy promoted by President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly stated that anyone living in the country without authorization is considered a criminal.
The administration has designed plans to intensify mass deportations and toughen penalties against those who overstay their visas.
Meanwhile, Rosa and his family have turned to a GoFundMe campaign to cover Mireya’s legal defense expenses.
Uncertainty over the future of the mother and wife keeps the family in suspense, amid a process that reflects the hardening of immigration policies in the United States, Newsweek reported.
