The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple alerts for severe winter weather conditions across various regions of the United States, just days before Christmas.

These warnings primarily affect Alaska, Montana, and mountainous areas of Idaho, where heavy snow, strong winds, and reduced visibility are expected, potentially complicating travel plans ahead of holiday celebrations.

In Alaska, the Lower Kobuk Valley and the Baldwin Peninsula are under a winter weather advisory effective until Tuesday morning.

According to the NWS in Fairbanks, snowfall of up to an inch is expected, accompanied by wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph.

These conditions will create blizzards with reduced visibility to half a mile or less, significantly hindering travel in the region.

Meanwhile, in Montana and northern Idaho, the NWS in Missoula has issued snow warnings for several mountainous areas.

In the Glacier West, Lower Clark Fork, and Kootenai/Cabinet regions, snow accumulations between 1 and 6 inches are expected.

Elevated passes such as Lookout Pass, Lolo Pass, and Marias Pass could face hazardous travel conditions due to persistent snowfall and wintry temperatures.

According to the winter weather alert, the most significant impacts will occur in higher elevations, where snow accumulation will be more substantial.

The NWS warns that conditions could disrupt infrastructure, lead to road closures, and make Tuesday morning traffic particularly challenging, especially on key routes such as Highways 93 and 200.

In light of these conditions, authorities are advising drivers to reduce speed, travel cautiously, and prepare for hazardous conditions.

The extreme winter weather arrives at a critical time for many Americans planning to travel by road or air in the days leading up to Christmas.
