Fish bites butt. If a fish bite wasn’t enough, it should be remembered that Floridians had to deal with another front of infestation … slimy and pretty ugly.
Killer toads have been invading this state since 2020 began. It’s not that they’re ugly, it depends on your taste. In fact, they are no uglier or cuter than other toads.
This is another invasive species in the Florida ecosystem. And not only is it a threat to pets, it also wreaks havoc on native wildlife.
They are also known as cane toads. What happens to these animals is that they ooze a milky, toxic substance called bufotoxin, which is deadly to cats and dogs if they bite, smell or lick these giant toads.
The toxin can also be dangerous to humans, and people should wear protective gloves and gear when disposing of toads, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
More than 600 sightings of cane toads had been confirmed in Florida as early as February 2020, according to a database and map from the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia.
Our killer toads, or cane toads, are native to South and Central America and were first brought to Florida to control pests in sugarcane fields in the 1930s, according to the University of Florida.
But, as with many things, the solution became problem over time. What was to be a controlled population of these animals resulted in escapes and releases from the pet trade in the 1950s and 1960s.
Outcome? Cane toads are now reported in central and southern Florida, usually south of the I-4 corridor. However, according to the University of Georgia map, sightings have been reported as far north as Gainesville.

Fish bites butt. This killer toad problem is not new or unique. Many of the pests of non-native species are incorporated into the environment as abandoned pets.
So the FWC asks that you contact them if you have an exotic pet that you can no longer keep. Do not release her thinking that you do something nice for her, you will be causing a possible problem like the one that now exists with Bufo Toad!
Contact the FWC Exotic Pet Amnesty Program to re-house your pet in an appropriate location.
Let’s go back to our killer toad.
We know that our cats and dogs are playful and curious. So, it is quite likely that if they come across a cane toad, they will try to bite or lick it.
If your pet comes into contact with one of these toxic toads, they could become seriously ill and die in as little as 15 minutes without treatment.
