A young U.S. citizen was wrongfully detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in a case that raised concerns about possible racial discrimination, according to Mayor Jacob Frey.
“Detained for no reason at all, in clear violation of the law and the Constitution of the United States, simply for walking down the street and looking Somali,” Frey stated.
He made the remarks during a press conference attended by local Police Chief Brian O’Hara and Mubashir, the young man who was arrested.
Mubashir, 20, explained that two masked men detained him while he was taking a break to eat.

The neighborhood where the detention occurred has been the target of federal raids.
This increase coincides with rhetoric from the White House directed specifically at the Somali population in Minnesota.
Local leaders have expressed that these operations have generated fear among both naturalized residents and U.S.-born citizens.
Mubashir’s detention reignited concerns about discriminatory law enforcement practices and the broader issue of wrongful ICE detention of a U.S. citizen.
Political Context Highlighted by Authorities
Mayor Frey linked the incident to the recent political climate.
He recalled that President Donald Trump has publicly questioned Somali immigrants in the state.
Trump has accused these communities of entering the country illegally and submitting fraudulent visa applications.
“They contribute nothing. I don’t want them in our country,” the president said about Somalis.
What Comes After Mubashir’s Detention
City officials indicated they will review the procedure applied in this case.
They also called on the federal government to clarify why a detention was carried out without prior verification of citizenship.
Frey stated that situations like this violate fundamental rights.
He assured that the city will support Mubashir in any process stemming from the incident involving the wrongful ICE detention of a U.S. citizen.
