Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed on Wednesday a trilateral meeting with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin as a way to move toward peace.

The proposal comes as Russia intensifies its military activity near the Ukrainian region of Sumy.

Zelensky suggested he is willing to engage in dialogue in any format—bilateral or trilateral—as long as it leads to concrete results.

“If Putin is not comfortable with a bilateral meeting, or if everyone prefers a trilateral one, I don’t mind. I’m ready for any format,” he stated.

Putin, however, has rejected previous proposals for talks, including an invitation extended in Turkey.

The Kremlin conditioned any potential meeting on the prior existence of some kind of “agreement.”

Donald Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of progress between the parties.

According to reports, Trump has voiced his frustration over the failure to reach a solution since the Russian invasion in 2022.

In his address on Wednesday, Zelensky also called on the United States to impose new economic sanctions on Moscow.

He asserted that these should focus on “the energy sector and the banking system” in Russia.

The Ukrainian president stressed that Russia’s refusal to accept a ceasefire requires a firm response.

He mentioned that Moscow had drafted a memorandum with proposals for a lasting agreement.

However, he stated that “Kyiv has not yet received it.”

“We will read their proposals and we will certainly respond to them” once they are received, he said.

From Russian diplomatic sources, it was indicated that the document will be delivered after the recent prisoner exchange.

This exchange took place last weekend and was described as “extensive” by official sources, which could be seen as one more step towards peace in Ukraine.

Zelensky also raised concerns about a buildup of Russian troops near the Sumy region.

“They are currently amassing troops in the direction of Sumy. More than 50,000,” he declared.

According to the president, Moscow may be planning an offensive to establish “a buffer zone” on the northeastern border.

The deployment of forces heightens fears of a new active combat front in that region.

Zelensky concluded his remarks by reiterating the urgency of diplomatic and sanction measures.

Do you think a meeting between Trump, Putin, and Zelensky could change the course of the war in Ukraine?
