Zohran Mamdani was confirmed on Tuesday as the winner of New York City’s Democratic primary and will be the party’s candidate for mayor after the Board of Elections released provisional results from the vote count, showing he secured 56% support.

Mamdani, 33, who describes himself as a socialist, defeated his rival, former governor Andrew Cuomo, a moderate Democrat, who garnered 44% of the votes in the third round of ranked-choice voting following last week’s primary election.

Mamdani’s victory marks a significant milestone for the progressive wing of the party, as he triumphed over a candidate with the extensive political experience of having served as governor and federal cabinet secretary.

The local Board of Elections is expected to certify the results in mid-July, which will formally confirm Mamdani’s candidacy, although his victory is already widely recognized.

Mamdani was already projected as the winner on primary night, a result that surprised many since polls had favored Cuomo, 63, the former federal housing secretary, former New York attorney general, and former governor, backed by the Democratic establishment.

That evening, Mamdani did not initially secure the 50% of votes needed to officially conclude the race under primary rules, but Cuomo seemed to concede by acknowledging Mamdani’s lead even before the process of redistributing votes in subsequent counting rounds began.

Winning the Democratic primary in New York City is typically decisive, as the nominee almost automatically becomes mayor in November. However, this time it’s uncertain whether the party will unify fully behind Mamdani.

Although the Democratic primary winner generally secures the mayoralty, it remains to be seen in November whether the entire party will support Mamdani—or whether some might lean toward current mayor Eric Adams, who plans to run as an independent.

The race for mayor will also include other prominent contenders, such as Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, who is making a second consecutive attempt to reclaim City Hall for the Republicans.

Mamdani’s political profile has attracted national and international attention, particularly because he identifies as a democratic socialist and has a history of activism defending the working class.

Among his proposals are measures such as freezing rents and improving access to public transportation—two issues of major importance to New Yorkers grappling with high living costs.

The young legislator is also known for his outspoken support of the Palestinian cause and his criticism of Israel, a stance that has proven controversial in the city.

His positions have sparked intense debates and have been highlighted as a point of polarization between the progressive wing and the more moderate faction of the Democratic Party.

Despite internal divisions, Zohran Mamdani’s victory is viewed as a significant shift in New York’s political landscape, signaling that the Democratic base is leaning increasingly toward more progressive candidates.

The outcome also raises questions about Cuomo’s ability to remain a political force in the state after a defeat that contradicted the polls and tarnished his once-perceived political invincibility.

For now, Mamdani is preparing for the fall campaign, during which he will need to consolidate internal alliances and face his opponents with a platform promising substantial changes for the city.

The result of this election will be crucial not only for New York City but also for shaping the broader dynamics and tensions within the Democratic Party at the national level.
