Abelardo de la Espriella Takes Office as Colombia’s President Amid Political Tensions

Abelardo de la Espriella was sworn in Friday as Colombia’s new president, opening a new political chapter after winning the June 21 election.
The inauguration broke with tradition, taking place in Cali instead of Bogotá, amid tight security and tensions with the outgoing government of Gustavo Petro.
Tight Security in Cali
More than 11,000 security personnel were deployed for the inauguration as members of Congress traveled to Cali for the ceremony.
Lawmakers from Pacto Histórico, Petro’s political movement, skipped the event and joined demonstrations taking place elsewhere in the country.
International Leaders Attend
The inauguration drew several international leaders and delegations, including King Felipe VI of Spain, Argentine President Javier Milei, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña.
Representatives from the United States, Israel, Sweden, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and Curaçao also attended, along with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
From Businessman to President
De la Espriella, a 48-year-old lawyer and businessman, takes office without having previously held elected office.
Throughout his campaign, he emphasized his private-sector experience and pledged to bring a business-oriented approach to government, focusing on efficiency and management.
His early Cabinet selections reflect that strategy, bringing together technical experts, business leaders, retired military officers and experienced politicians.
A Tense Transfer of Power
The transition was marked by disagreements between De la Espriella and Petro’s outgoing government, including disputes over inauguration protocols and the guest list.
Petro did not attend the transfer-of-power ceremony.
De la Espriella also reported receiving threats during the campaign and increased his security following the killing of members of his political movement.
Challenges Ahead
De la Espriella begins his presidency facing deep political divisions, economic challenges and security concerns.
His administration is expected to prioritize closer ties with the United States, a tougher approach to organized crime and government reforms focused on efficiency.
He will also have to work with a fragmented Congress while navigating the political and social divisions surrounding Colombia’s change in leadership.
