US Expands Border Wall as Trump Toughens Deportations

Meanwhile, Donald Trump boasted in an interview about the reduction in border crossings.

The United States will add more than 10 kilometers to its border wall with Mexico to prevent the arrival of irregular immigrants, announced this Sunday by Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem.

“I am here in Arizona. And right at this point, you can see where the border wall ends. Today we begin seven miles (11.26 kilometers) of construction. We will continue to work to make America safe again,” she said in a video she shared on X.

Trump Boasts Border Control with Wall Extension and Accelerates Deportations

For his part, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated in a pre-recorded interview aired on the program Full Measure that since he took office in January of this year, the crossing of irregular immigrants at the southern border of the country has improved “99%” compared to the administration of his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden (2021-2025).

“I said close the border and they closed the border,” he asserted in the interview.

On Saturday, Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to accelerate mass deportations of members of the transnational gang Tren de Aragua.

This law allows for deportations without a hearing and has only been invoked on three occasions in the country’s history, all during times of war: the War of 1812 and both World Wars.

“We don’t need many new laws,” the president pointed out in the interview, referring to how the Executive can reduce the presence of undocumented individuals or those who supposedly pose a threat to the country.

Although a federal judge temporarily blocked the use of this law on Saturday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported that about 250 alleged members of the Tren de Aragua have been transferred to El Salvador.

The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has offered to imprison them in exchange for a “fair” price.

Critics of this measure have pointed out that Trump’s mass deportation without hearings violates human rights and could affect people who have no criminal records.

Criticism of the Law and the Progress of the Wall

Immigrant defense organizations have warned that the use of the Alien Enemies Act sets a dangerous precedent and could be applied in the future against other migrant groups.

Meanwhile, the construction of the wall progresses amidst an election year in which Trump’s immigration policy will be a key issue in his attempt to remain in the White House.
