ICE Operation Leaves Vehicles Abandoned in Virginia

On Tuesday morning, residents and workers in Ruckersville reported seeing a large presence of federal and local agents across different areas of the community.

According to testimony collected by Charlottesville Tomorrow, the operation mainly involved traffic stops.

Dozens of empty vehicles were seen along local roads while authorities carried out their actions.

During a phone call Tuesday afternoon, Greene County Sheriff Steven Smith confirmed to Charlottesville Tomorrow that his deputies were assisting ICE with arrests.

However, officials did not reveal how many people were arrested or detained during the operation.

Smith declined to provide details about the individuals involved and said questions regarding the arrests should be directed to ICE.

By Tuesday afternoon, the federal agency had not responded to requests for information from Charlottesville Tomorrow.

Andrew Wilder Young, an attorney with the Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance, said he witnessed a significant deployment of law enforcement resources.

According to his account, he saw ICE agents and sheriff’s deputies using more than two dozen official vehicles, along with several unmarked white SUVs.

Young said agents were stationed throughout different areas of the town, including Spotswood Trail and U.S. Route 29.

He also reported seeing numerous work trucks and other abandoned vehicles.

According to his observations, those vehicles may have been left behind after the people driving them were detained.

Community members near the intersection of Routes 29 and 33 said it appeared that agents were focusing their actions on work trucks.

Operation began early and reached local businesses

An employee at a nearby restaurant close to the Legacy Church office on Spotswood Trail said agents remained in the church parking lot for much of the morning.

According to the employee, they saw four vehicles stopped and arrests carried out afterward.

They also said the last arrest they witnessed occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Charlottesville Tomorrow spoke with residents who said the operation had been underway since at least 6:30 a.m.

Another community member said ICE agents were also present at a Lowe’s store located along Route 29.

Two employees at the store confirmed seeing the agents.

They also said a Latino coworker was detained during the morning, although the person was later released.

The employees did not provide additional details about the individual or the circumstances surrounding the detention.

Charlottesville Tomorrow contacted Lowe’s public relations department for comment, but no immediate response had been received by the time of publication.
