Kaylee Hottle was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2007 and grew up in Austin, Texas.
She came from a family with deep roots in the deaf community.
Both Kaylee and her parents were deaf.
According to The Houston Chronicle, four generations of Joshua Hottle’s family were part of the deaf community.
She attended the Texas School for the Deaf.
Kaylee Hottle began her acting career at just nine years old, appearing in commercials created for deaf audiences.
She also appeared in campaigns for Glide and Convo, communication apps designed for users of American Sign Language.
According to People, producers of Kong: Skull Island discovered Kaylee after seeing one of those commercials.
They believed she was the perfect choice to portray Jia.
Kaylee Hottle’s film debut came in 2021 with Godzilla vs. Kong.
She starred alongside Rebecca Hall, Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Brian Tyree Henry, and Eiza González.
In the film, Jia shares a unique bond with Kong and communicates with him using sign language.
During filming, Rebecca Hall and Alexander Skarsgård learned American Sign Language to communicate with Kaylee.
Speaking to Junkee while promoting the film, Skarsgård praised the young actress:
«It’s her first movie. It’s amazing how comfortable she is in front of the camera and how quickly she picks up director Adam Wingard’s notes. He would explain something to her, and she’d say, ‘Got it, got it,’ and then she’d just do it. We all wondered, ‘How did she do that?’ She’s incredibly professional, and there’s so much expression in her face. The subtlety of her facial expressions is fascinating to watch.»
Kaylee Hottle also emphasized the importance of authentic representation:
«It’s important for deaf actors to play deaf characters. Deaf people know their own language and are more familiar with the culture.»
In 2024, she reprised the role of Jia in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
That same year, she earned a Saturn Award nomination for Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Film.
She also appeared as Joon in an episode of Season 4 of Magnum P.I.
