New York Police are preparing to face one of the largest security operations in recent years for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Authorities expect more than one million people to visit the city during the tournament, which will also coincide with celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.

The main concern for security forces is the threat of armed drones, a technology that has gained prominence in recent international conflicts.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that this is the threat that worries her most ahead of the international sporting event.

“It would be a mistake to ignore that technology,” Tisch said, according to ABC.

New York Buys Equipment to Detect Drones

According to the EFE news agency, the police chief explained that the city is already training officers and acquiring specialized technology to confront possible drone attacks.

According to Tisch, New York Police are investing $6.5 million in equipment intended to counter these types of threats.

The official said the preparation is being carried out “with the seriousness it deserves.”

The concern comes after the use of armed drones seen in recent conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.

New York and New Jersey will be part of the 16 U.S. cities selected as FIFA World Cup host sites.

The United States will organize the championship together with Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

Although the matches will be played mainly at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, thousands of fans will stay in and travel from New York.

The city comptroller’s office estimates that at least 1.2 million people will arrive in the Big Apple during the tournament.

World Cup and Historic Celebrations Increase Pressure

The New York drone security challenge will not be limited only to the World Cup.

Between July 3 and July 8, New York and New Jersey will also host Sail4th 250, an international maritime gathering organized for the U.S. independence celebrations.

The event will bring together around 30 large international sailing ships and 40 military vessels.

A British aircraft carrier and Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 will also participate, among other vessels.

The overlap of both events will significantly increase the number of people in streets, parks, and public transportation systems.

Jessica Tisch recently warned that New York remains a possible target for terrorist attacks.

“This city will host major international events, large public gatherings, and historic commemorations,” the commissioner said during an event held last week.

The official noted that millions of people will gather in public spaces during those dates.

Overtime Creates Political Tension in the City

Given the scale of the operation, Tisch wants officers to work 12-hour shifts during part of the World Cup.

The proposal comes at a complicated time for the city’s finances.

New York is currently facing a fiscal crisis that has delayed approval of the municipal budget while it awaits state financial support.

According to Politico, the overtime proposal has sparked a quiet dispute between Tisch and Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The mayor opposes the increase in overtime because of the economic impact it would have on the city.

In addition to the World Cup and maritime celebrations, several media outlets have reported that singer Taylor Swift and football player Travis Kelce would get married in New York on July 3.

The wedding, which would bring together between 150 and 200 guests connected to the entertainment and sports worlds, could also attract major public and tourist attention.

Authorities continue preparing New York drone security plans as one of the busiest periods for visitors in the city’s recent history approaches.
